For 7 years in a row now the Mediterranean Diet (MD) has been voted number 1 overall by the US News and World Report. This is no surprise to me as a nutritionist. I consciously chose to specialise in this area, because it is the healthiest way to live and eat. It's great to see that the Western World is giving the MD the recognition that it very much deserves. Especially during a time when we are swamped by so many processed foods, and at a time where we need answers on how we can become and stay healthy.
Gretel Schueller, managing editor of the US News and World Report told ABC News that "The Mediterranean diet is healthy, it's sustainable, it's a flavourful way to eat and it's adaptable". I completely agree with this statement. It is such a delicious way to stay healthy. My whole family both love and thrive upon it. I also remember the members of the face to face Cressing classes saying how much their families were also enjoying the MD.
The MD describes the way that those countries surrounding the Mediterranean sea traditionally ate and lived, and how those in Sardinia and Ikaria still do. This includes Morroco, Italy, Lebanon, Greece and Spain. The diet has a seasonal plant slant, and focuses on healthy fats such as olive oil, oily fish, nuts, seeds and avocados. A naturally active and social lifestyle is also really important.
There are many benefits to the MD such as extending your lifespan, less likelihood to get stroke, heart disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and blood pressure, and other chronic diseases.
No food is prohibited. However, some should be eaten sparingly such as red meat, ultra processed foods, desserts, sweets, refined grains and refined oils. The US News and World Reports says the diet leaves "little room for the saturated fat, added sugars and sodium that inundate the standard American diet".
So, what are you waiting for? Now is a great time to start!
I am aiming to start online Mediterranean Diet and Lifestyle groups at the start of this year. Once I get enough people on the waiting list I will get started. The plan is to run them Wednesday evenings 8-9pm term time only. They will cost a budget friendly £5 per session.
